Who We Are
The Retired Teachers of Ontario ~ les enseignantes et enseignants retraités de l'Ontario.
The official voice for all retired Ontario teachers. A voluntary organization of over 61 000 retired Ontario educators.
What We Do
Monitor pension legislation, providing input on proposed changes and recommending improvements, e.g. indexing of pensions (1975); adjustments to low pensions (1988); the Social Contract (1993); triennial pension improvement negotiations, with OTF, (1993, 1996, 1999, etc.).
Provide health and other insurance benefits such as no-deductible Extended Health Care, travel while outside Ontario, vision, dental, auto and home insurance.
Advocate and take political action on behalf of retired teachers on issues such as health care, education, services for seniors, energy and the environment.
Publish Renaissance, a quarterly magazine for members
Offer a travel program for members and friends.
Provide over 45 Fact Sheets containing helpful information specifically for retired Ontario teachers.
Offer support and financial assistance to members in need.

MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES
|
Membership in RTO/ERO is available in
two categories: Full and Associate.
Retired teachers who meet one of the following criteria are eligible to become full members of RTO/ERO:
a retired teacher who is receiving a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund
a retired teacher who is receiving a pension from a teachers' pension fund in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario.
Individuals who meet one of the following criteria are eligible to become associate members of RTO/ERO.
a retired teacher who is receiving a pension in his/her own right from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund, and whose spouse is a Full Member of RTO/ERO
a retired teacher who opted for the commuted value of his/her contributions to the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund
a retired teacher who is not eligible to receive a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund
the spouse of a Full or Associate member who, in his/her own right, is not eligible to receive a teacher's pension
the surviving spouse of a Full or Associate member who, in his/her own right, is not eligible to receive a teacher's pension
a retired educator who is receiving a pension from the Ontario Public Service or the equivalent from a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario
a retired educator who is receiving a pension from a University or College in Canada
a person who holds a teaching certificate and, upon retirement, will be eligible to receive a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
a person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to the Ontario Public Service Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
a person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to an Ontario University or College Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
a retired teacher whose qualifications are from a country other than Canada
the holder of a teacher's certificate who is employed under a form of contract that is not a Standard Form of Contract, and is a member of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan
a non-educator divorced spouse of a Full or Associate member
a retired non-educator employee of an Ontario School Board, who is in receipt of a pension
a retired non-educator employee of an Ontario educational organization who is in receipt of a pension

MEMBERSHIP FEES
|
Fees are collected on an annual basis.
$1.20 per $1000, or major fraction thereof, of gross annual pension.
$ .88 per $1000, or major fraction thereof, of gross annual pension, for:
A surviving spouse of a Full or Associate member who, in his/her own right, is not eligible to receive a teacher's pension
$22 for:
A person who holds a teaching certificate and, upon retirement, will be eligible to receive a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
A person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to the Ontario Public Service Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
A person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to an Ontario University or College Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
$47 for all other Associate member categories
